This module aims to teach students how to input text using the keyboard, to use the mouse to move around within the document and to access features, like print, save and spellcheck. Students will learn how to save and retrieve documents. They also begin to understand how to use the software to improve the accuracy of their work.
Students can input a short piece of text unaided (20-30 words) - this could be their own original work or copied from text given by assessment. Students need to be able to make changes to the text but are not necessarily able to spot errors themselves.Students should be confident enough with the software to be able to select icons such as save, print and use the spellchecker (if available) without assistance. This learning objective is concerned with the student!|s ability to find and select tools rather than knowing how to use them efficiently. However, saving a document with an incorrect filename or selecting an incorrect option from the spellchecker should not disqualify this learning objective being awarded.

Students need to be able to make changes to the text and are necessarily able to spot errors themselves. Students show that they can name and save a document in the appropriate place, (e.g. floppy disk or hard disk) and can retrieve it later, without help, to make changes to it. Students use a combination of proof reading (on screen or printed) and use spellchecker (if available) to ensure that final text has been checked and corrected without help.
At the end of this course, student will take the ICT Starters Assessment of Initial Steps Stage 1 Module 1: Starting with Text.
Cambridge Certification is available at TWO stages.
